Glimpses of the future
In every age there are groups of pioneers in architecture who compare their achievements and take strength from discussing each others experiences, trials and tribulations. Thus, Brunelleschi or Michelangelo were not alone in their design of the dome in Florence Cathedral or the Sistine Chapel. Each would have been in influenced by or been in competition with their contemporaries. Michelangelo feared Bramante but was influenced by Leonardo de Vinci.2 Brunelleschi was in competition with Ghiberti. Similarly Isambard Brunel, although the most famous of British engineers, was only part of a movement with others responding to a sudden expansion of the railway system in England. In Russia the collaboration of architects such as Golosov, Melnikov, Leonidov and others were all part of the Russian Revolution.
